Kobe is famous for its jazz bars, but this one is a cut above the rest.
Basin Street is a small, intimate space consisting of a bar and about ten tables. On the night I visited, the customers were a mix – middle-aged men and women along with young hipsters.
Unlike at many of the larger bars, where Kobeites go to see and be seen, everyone here was clearly here to listen to jazz. No one spoke a word during the performances. The higher quality of the music here brings the cover charge up to 1500-2000 yen.
The bartender is attentive and speaks some English. Later on in the evening the English-speaking owner dropped in and we had a chance to converse with him and the performers. The quiet, yet welcoming atmosphere makes this the place to go for a low-key evening of jazz.
